Class Agenda #53 – Grading Each Other and Serial Episode #9

SLT/Grade 4 3 2

-Analyzes both explicit and inferred ideas/information from texts through interpretation of the author’s meaning and purpose.
Constantly refers to sources when appropriate

Round 1- A word that comes to mind for this rubric

  • #515 “She Knows” J Cole (2013 – 4:57 )
  • DO NOW- Read the following Body Paragraphs. Grade them on the Rubric.
  •  There must be constant evidence to convict someone of a crime and there was more than enough for the case regarding the murder of Hae Min Lee. Adnan Syed was convicted of the crime starting when the police got a call saying to look at the ex boyfriend, being Adnan, which led to the testimony of Jay. Jays testimony at first seemed contradicting , however there are other witnesses that can testify to his testimony, such as Nisha , who jay said he spoke to and she confirmed it. “Adnan’s story is that he and his cell phone were separated that day.” However Nisha stated adnan had been on the phone with her before he past it to Jay, this contradicts Adnans statement that he did not have his phone that day. Also at the time of the call Adnan was supposedly in school, therefore this call meant that he wasn’t in school, but with Jay.

  •  Adnan Syed had gone to “Cathy’s” house after the supposed murder of ex-girlfriend, Hae Lee. Cathy would say that it was out of the norm for Adnan and Jay to show up at her house, because they were only friends because of a mutual friend. She says that Adnan was acting a bit weird even though he may have been high. He had received a call while there, when he answered he seem worried saying “ What am I going to say? They’re going to come talk to me.” This was a bit suspicious adding on to the suspicion he already had when he is sitting in practically a strangers house after murdering his ex-girlfriend. Adnan Syed had been suspicious, lied, and become defencive over subject that weren’t so important, these could be some factors of his guilt in the case.

Looking Over an Assessment from Last Friday-

    • Argumentative Writing: The Case Against Adnan

Question:  After hearing “The Case Against Adnan” how did the Prosecution and Jury Convict him? What evidence was their conviction based on?

Directions: Write 2 well-developed paragraphs that address the questions above.

Structure your body paragraphs to include the follow:

      1. Topic Sentence
      2. Analyze the evidence
        1. Restate the evidence in your own words. If there is a quote, restate the quote in your own words. If it is an interpretation of a passage or graph, restate the interpretation in your own words.
        2. Explain why this piece of evidence is important and how the evidence links to or supports your argument.

3.Closing or transition sentence to finish the paragraph

Type your two body paragraphs below:

The prosecution and jury convicted Adnan base on the laura testimony, because laura said her neighbor boy she was friend with told her that a boy name Adnan show him a body of a girl in the back of the truck dead. He was shock so he told laura about it. Both of the people didn’t know Adnan like that. This mean after Adnan killed Hae we was going around showing people what he have done. Also their was another evidence use against him, which was cathy. Cathy said one day jay arrive with Adnan out of no where and jay and Cathy wasnt that cool, they were cool because of jay girlfriend who was bestfriend with cathy. Cathy said then they arrive at the house they were acting weird and Adnan was on the phone with someone and he heard him saying “how do I get rid of a high?”  this mean Adnan could of been up to something and he was really scared and didn’t know what to do.The other evidence was the nisha call, the nisha call was a smoking gun call because their was no answer to who call nish talk to  that day. Adnan said he was in school and jay had his phone and nish said he talk to adnan and he was at the studio with jay,  Nish also said that she didn’t have a voice recorder on her home phone and Adnan said she did. So the story didn’t make since, it was not connecting to each other. Nish only knew Adnan she didn’t know jay, she only had talk to jay one time on the phone. So it could kind of be a knock of, to make him look guilty.
